Frequently asked questions

Does SayPlay upload my child's voice?

No. Speech recognition runs on-device via Apple's SFSpeechRecognizer with on-device recognition required. SayPlay makes zero network requests — you can verify by running the app in airplane mode. Full functionality is preserved.

Why does the app refuse to start with “on-device dictation isn't available”?

To keep our privacy promise we refuse to fall back to Apple's server-side recognizer. To fix:

  • Open iOS Settings → General → Keyboard.
  • Scroll to Dictation and make sure it's enabled.
  • Make sure the language you picked in SayPlay matches a keyboard with on-device dictation installed.
  • Some older iPhones / iPads don't support on-device dictation in every language. Switching SayPlay's recognition language to English (U.S.) usually resolves this.
Why isn't SayPlay picking up my child's words?

Three common causes:

  • Background noise: SayPlay works best in a quiet room. TV, fan, or sibling chatter can suppress detection.
  • Distance from phone: keep the phone within ~1 meter of your child.
  • Voice enrollment dropping the speaker: if you enrolled your child's voice, sessions filter out non-target speakers. If detection feels too aggressive, you can re-enroll from Settings → Voice ID.
How do I switch language?

Settings → Recognition language. Note: vocabulary “typical age” tags are based on the MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) norms, which currently ship for English only. Other languages still transcribe and track vocabulary, but the typical-age tags will be hidden.

How do I add a second child?

Settings → Children → Add another child. Multi-child support is behind a feature flag; if you don't see the option, enable it in Settings → Developer (tap the version number five times to reveal).

What's the parental check for?

Per Apple's Kids guidelines, destructive actions (Wipe All Data) and data-sharing actions (Research Export) require an adult to confirm. We use a single-digit arithmetic challenge — biometrics like Face ID are not allowed as parental gates.

How do I delete everything?

Settings → Wipe All Data. Confirm via the parental gate. Deletion is instant, permanent, and cannot be undone. Uninstalling the app also removes all SayPlay data from your device.

What is the Research Export?

An optional, anonymized JSON snapshot of per-session statistics, vocabulary, and milestone evaluations. Name and birth date are stripped. The file is generated locally and shared only when you tap the share sheet and pick a destination. We never auto-upload.

Which devices and iOS versions are supported?

iPhone or iPad running iOS / iPadOS 18.0 or later.

Is SayPlay a medical or diagnostic tool?

No. SayPlay surfaces patterns and supports conversations with your pediatrician or speech-language pathologist. It is not a substitute for professional evaluation. If you have concerns about your child's development, talk to a qualified clinician.
